Immigration and international students

Over the past decade, the number of visa students and new immigrants coming to Canada with a
university degree has grown strongly. There are several reasons to expect that this trend
will continue to place upward pressure on enrolment demand. Several recent studies project very strong
increases in international student demand for Canadian higher education over the coming
decade, with particularly strong growth from East Asia. In 2007, there were 2.8 million international
tertiary students worldwide, representing a 53 percent increase since 1999.16 A report produced
by IDP Education Australia estimates that by 2025 there will be 3.7 million international tertiary students
worldwide, 47 percent of whom will be Asian.17 While strong growth in international student numbers is
expected to continue over the next 20 years, the competition for those
students, especially the best and brightest among them, is also expected to intensify.
